You may have been trying to join a site that doesn't take Aussie traffic -- there are quite a few people who only take US joins and fail to mention that -- or the site owner may just have made a mistake in their configurations.
Without knowing the exact site that you are talking about, there's no way that I could tell you specifically what the issue is.
