The fact is the public may never know the whole truth and nothing but the truth about this bombing incident.
Having spent more than thirty years in the US Army, I am more than aware, that our military has, on more than one occassion, thrown our personal to the wolves. Usually this is done to polictically appease, but is sometimes done, to cover the asses of superior officers, in the chain of command.
Soldiers usually do not disobey orders, particularly those that are as well trained as our pilots are. I for one would like to see what rules of engagement they were provided, and what operational briefing they were provided, before their flight (official and unofficial). In addition I would like to see a transcript of the audio between their controller and themselves.
I personally think there is little chance that they knowingly disobeyed orders, but of course the small possibility does exist that they were cowboys and acted outside of the box.
