GFY is not a newbie help board
it is, at best, an informal hangout. More often, it is loaded with insults - and that is why it is so popular! It is the online equivelent of a locker room, water cooler, cafeteria, or coffee shop bitchfest during the work day.
There are so many boards that will be much more productive to someone starting out than GFY. And many other boards are similar - I would not send a newbie to the Netpond Main board, the Adult Net Surprise Main board, etc etc Most of the these boards have no patience for newcommers - and that is why there is such a plethora of newbie boards today.
Just because it is a BBS you should not expect a warm welcome and a helping hand.
