?PORN? That evil word grabs the attention of anybody and everybody who ever hears it outside of our little circle. Most like it but few will publicly admit it, especially in mixed crowds. Most have paid for it at one time or another which creates a supply and demand issue that they then seem to somehow overlook while they are busy passing judgment on those of us who are in this industry. If you think there is a single male in the Bush administration who has never purchased ?porn? in one form or another then you are sadly mistaken.

The days of making easy money in online porn are far gone now. The media has pushed us into the spotlight and in many ways they have even made porn more acceptable. In doing so, they have helped to flood the market more then ever and have made it a bit easier to find willing models as well.


2HousePlague gave me a few suggestions to write about. One of them was Model Recruiting. Since I recently wrote about this on www.kblogger.com I will refrain from doing so again. What I will do is suggest that you check it out.

I will also follow it up by saying that many people thought I was full of shit about recruiting total amateurs in public places. If you attended the San Diego show a few weeks back then you might recognize this girl since she was one of the hotel staff.




Many people tried to get her to work with them but only one actually has the chance?.Although I?ve been way too busy to follow up with her lately. She has a good amateur look and is a real sweetheart too. I can?t wait to get back to Diego and work with her.

Producing ?porn? for a living is not as easy as most people think. All the time people tell me that I must have the best job in the world. Oh yeah? Try dealing with models, suitcase pimps, and picky clients. Spend a day shooting then another day or two editing and prepping the content. Then come back and tell me how easy I have it. Don?t even get me started on the marketing aspects of this business. I know 2 very kick ass shooters who post on GFY from time to time and both of them are the typical ?starving artist? simply because neither of them know how to market what they shoot. They have OK ideas but none that will ever appeal to the masses and they don?t even know how to implement their ideas themselves yet they don?t see the value in properly paying somebody else to help them sell it. It?s pretty sad really.



Getting models to do more freaky shit is pretty easy. I learned a long time ago that it?s not what you say but how you say it. If a girl comes in and wants to shoot regular nudes but your needs include masturbation or more, you have to overcome these obstacles.

The first thing I do is tell them what I need. The harsh truth of the matter is that I really don?t give a fuck what the model wants to do, I care about my needs and the needs of my clients. If the model is not comfortable filling those needs then I have no use for her. There is always another model standing in line who will do the work the way I want. The bottom line on this is that if you give anybody the choice of jobs, they will always take the easier job. If these girls could make as much money and not get naked then they would. Forget the bullshit and just cut to the chase. "This is what I need you to do and this is how much it pays. Are you interested?"

Some photographers view this differently than I. I prescreen every phone call I get and most of the girls are prepared to do hardcore B/G work before they even step foot into my office, even if I am not shooting hardcore at that time. These days, it?s rare for a girl to tell me no on the hardcore thing but when they do, if their description is good then I will still invite them in for an interview. By doing it this way, one of two things happens. 1: The girl who will not do hardcore feels lucky that I am willing to work with her. She takes it as a bit of a compliment and is more receptive to my other requests. 2: Most are now prepared to fuck on camera and when they end up doing softcore, they are more relaxed because it?s not pushing their limits as much as they were expecting. Plus, if I do have a hardcore shoot to do?.I now have most of my models who are willing to do it and prepared for me to request it.

I could go on for days about various parts of this business.....But these are a couple of basics for you to consider. If you have any specific questions then I will be more than happy to answer them.

You and I have never really spoken or gotten to know each other, though I have looked forward to the opportunity for a long time. The admiration for your work I professed when we chatted on the phone a few days ago is quite sincere, and based on a quality I see in your images that I think vital to good content, yet lacking from most of what we see.

To put it simply, your models seem happy to be there --

Given that quality in evidence in all your work, I'm curious about -- I guess you could call it -- your Production Philosophy. It seems you remain sharply focused on the product, and always mindful of the "needs of your clients", as you termed it. That suggests -- aloofness & control. Would you say that's true -- versus, a more flirtatious/seductive rapport during a shoot -- ?

Certainly, the world of fine art has many examples of Great Artists known for their dogged, unequivocating pursuit of a Personal Vision. Cinema, also.

In porn, though, I wasn't sure how to account for the *spark of difference* you sometimes see in a piece of work. For me, if there is any indication of boredom or distraction in the performers, it kinda kills it. I always wondered, then, whether the exceptional performances I would sometimes (but, still, too rarely) come across were the result of merely *accidents of circumstance*, or whether there are any photographers or directors working in porn who have a *method* for producing that effect with consistency.

I think the reason the Reality stuff enjoyed such explosive popularity was because the *method* of its making necessarily added elements of spontaneity and reactions and expressions in the performers that those watching could recognize as *real*.

My interest in this relates to concerns about the evolutionary direction our content may be taking. What is next -- ? Where do we go from here -- ? What responsibility, if any do we have to our customers beyond simply meeting their demands -- ? Our society offers so little in the way of Sex Instruction -- many people *learn* sex from us. No one else wants the job, who will do it with any openness and tolerance --perhaps, it IS all up to us, in which case, it behooves us to acknowledge our position.

These questions are "spoken" as if to Aaron, because he was kind enough to provide fodder for the discussion -- but ANY and ALL are invited/welcomed to contribute here.

I always hate having to prepare a bio (especially when so many of you know me), because I never really know what to tell people! Let me start with the basics: My name is Kayla Quinn, I am a 34 year old computer nerd. I got started online in late 1996, and opened my own website in July of 1998; I started as an "internet model" while I was still active duty Air Force, stationed at Nellis AFB, NV. I am quite proud of my military service and was highly decorated. I was presented with the Air Force Commendation Medal, at the time I was one of five Senior Airmen in the history of the United States Air Force to be awarded that medal.


Since I started my online life (my initial url was www.kayla-marie.com, then www.KaylaCam.com), I have grown and changed a bit. I have appeared in numerous adult films, mainstream movies and television shows. I have also been seen in magazines and calendars. I was awarded the KSex Radio 2003 Listeners Choice Award for "Favorite Amateur Porn Star 2003".

I enjoy my life online and strive to make it as fun for my members as I can. I try to provide the best porn that I can make and/or find without limiting my interaction with my members to porn. My website vascilates between being a labor of love and an arch nemesis, but I cannot imagine not having it.



And now...let me get started with the advice giving!


When I was first approached about writing this 'advice', I was not sure I was the right person for the job. I own not the largest nor most lucrative website...I do, however, have almost 10 years experience in this arena. What advice can I offer the noob? Let me state it simply, then expand upon what I consider to be the key: Be true to yourself. Sounds simple, doesn't it? It can be rough.

In this industry, there will always be someone telling you that you HAVE to do something in order to succeed. Listen to yourself, not to others. The only opinion that truely matters is your own. You cannot betray your own moral code/comfort levels and still enjoy this industry. Whether it be your own website or a film career, you must set your own limitations and stick with them This is not to say that limits do not change or that these are carved in stone. This is just to clarify that the only stone mason worthy of changing these personal rules is yourself. When I started out in films, I was told that I *had* to do anal, I *had* to do inter-racial, I *had* to do gang bangs, I *had* to do extreme scenes. I was also told that I was too old, too tall, too heavy and had too many tattoos to have any sort of a career in film. I set my own boundaries, decided what I was and was not willing to shoot and left the negative criticism where it belonged...behind me. Fourteen months later, I have reshaped my comfort levels and have shot approximately 80 scenes (some dvd, some internet site content). I have not let others hold me back, nor have I betrayed myself.

Keep in mind, as you are getting started in this business, that there is very little "wiggle room". Everything you film, produce, pose for, is out there for the world to see. If there is any one person you do not want finding out you are in the adult entertainment industry, be assured they WILL find out about it. Once you dedicate something to any medium, be it print, electronic or film, it is impossible for you to retract it and hide it from anybody. This is why it is so important that you stay honest with yourself and know your limitations. (If you feel you must have a drink or a little bit of some chemical to loosen yourself up in order to do a cam show or to film a scene, this is NOT the right business for you.)

Remember that one of your most valuable assets is your reputation. I was recently asked in an interview: Besides your own site, what amateur site would you recommend me to join? Why do you recommend this specific site?

After pondering that for a bit, my reply was simple, yet honest. "OY! This is a WAY unfair question for many reasons! I know far too many amateur gals to choose just one website to throw out there. Besides, there are tons of niches and specialty websites that appeal to a certain genre. The best I can say is this: Look for a website that looks like it is actually updated; no sense in paying a recurring membership for a site that has ceased to grow. Personally, I tend to read through a website to see if I can glean anything of the gals personality in the text. Bland, impersonal, or cliche text generally means a bland, impersonal, cliche website. I also look for little 'tips' that the site I am looking at is a fake-amateur website. Does it look EXACTLY like a few other websites that I have seen? (I usually go to the "Webmasters" link and check that out a bit if I suspect it is not a genuine amateur website.) I have a quirky sense of humor and am very experimental, so I tend to be drawn to those websites which are unique. I also read what they offer with their website. I am frugal...how much am I getting for my dollar? How much of that content is static (pictures, stories, etc) and how much dynamic (cam shows, chats, etc)...just to see if there is going to be something live on those late nights when I cannot sleep. I look for lies, too. Does the amateur claim to be a pre-med student yet have half the words on her site misspelled? If they lie about their bio, how can I trust them to tell me the truth about their members content. Then again, I might just be a little anal retentive about this sort of stuff...LOL"

Also, make sure you know how to do things yourself! Do not rely on anyone else to take care of things for you. You never know when that person might not be available and leave you stranded...this goes for fixing your website as well as for pumping up your....ego....

I realize this is a bit rambling and chaotic, such is the life of most porn chickies! I hope this offers some insight for those debating venturing in to this biz, if not, I owe you 3 minutes of your life back! ;)

Having had the pleasure of knowing Kayla for a couple years now (I believe it was Joe's Crab Shack that I first had the pleasure of handling her boobs), I can state that Kayla definitely practices what she preaches.

If you have ever been to her place you know that she has it together and really takes care of her members. She has cams everywhere!! And her members area has more content than a lot of sponsors paysites I have seen.

Ok! It was, indeed, my cam site that I started back in the day...altho at that time, the cams were not initially 24/7. I did not start running my cam (at that time, I started with one 24/7 cam) until 1999. At that time, the market was easier and I had the distinct advantage as most sites were still using Webcam 32 for thier cam software. For those not grasping the concept here...I not only had a less diluted target market but I was one of the first to have streaming software and one of the first to have audio capabilities as well. While most sites were advertising an image every 30-45 seconds, I was blazing in comparison.

As for the current 24/7 cam situation...the legal issues are getting more and more complicated *grumble grumble* IF there is even a possibility that any adult situations will occur, I get 2257 info/releases signed. I allow no one under the age of 21 in my home. All guests are forewarned that I run my cams and that by entering my home they are agreeing to have their likeness broadcast via the internet. I currently run 6 cams 24/7 as well as a replay cam. I schedule 3 interactive cam/sex shows/chats a week. Sometimes these include guests (most often David). My show schedule is posted for my members and updated weekly.

I have five dogs who think they are in a war zone, which they are, during this holiday of holidays. While I'm all psyched that it's America's birthday, they are refusing to go outside to perform their duties as dogs...

Instead, they are cowering and quivering under beds, in corners, the entire weekend, which does become a flashy "let's buy out the entire display and get the loudest bang bangs manufactured and legally (some not so legally) permissable missiles of colour.

I begin to dread this holiday. As an adopted citisen, I adore my country, even with all that is happening within and beyond its borders; but, I do live in a neighbourhood which is filled to overflowing with cedar houses and very tall trees. Having to wet down my house, roof and grounds every day for an entire weekend is not my idea of fun.

And, now, back to the show at hand.
