what are the advantages of paid TGP/MGP listings over free spots or vice versa. The cost thing is obvious but what makes people buy a spot when they can get it for free?

Guaranteed. I guess that is the appeal. But I am curious on link buying too. Most people say it's not worth it, but then I see spots bought all the time. -
I find it humorous that TGP's raped submitters for years, built their sites on their collective work, then turns around and charges em for listings.

very few are worth the cost, some tgp's are built for the sole reason of collecting $ from submitters because the owners know it's not worth trying to make $ from the traffic themselves
there are some exceptions of course, and the prices on those are usually quite reasonable
