you might want to change your term.. most people wouldn't know what it is... and even then it can just mean retention or lack thereof.

Restaurant Effect = people lining up to get into a restaurant OR large windows showing a full restaurant RESULTS in longer lines/more people wanting to get in.

Reverse is also true.

There is no limited places so it won't happen ... the net is too big to create that kind of hype without a multi-million $ marketing campaing.

A lineup creates a lineup - can also be affected by buyer satisfaction reinforcement.

For instance: "The most downloaded woman on the internet" makes you think that you're the only one who hasn't seen her, ie: there is a crowd that you want to belong to.

By telling people that they are a part of this crowd, you reinforce their buying decision. They feel special by being smart enough to be one of the people on "the in".

Now, how to create this?

Have an active user counter. If there are 1200 people on the site right now, I'm thinking there's something drawing them that I'm missing.

or a daily new member counter

I think all you need to do is tell people there are tons of people in the restaurant and they'll believe you

I understand and appreciate your attempt at sarcasm and wit BUT if someone is going to say "everyone tries but few succeed" and insinuate a higher level of knowledge--AT LEAST share some of that knowledge.
