    Is the video game industry bigger than adult?

    I stopped finding games enjoyable many moons ago, but games are the reason why I even became interested in computers. Anybody had first experiencing working in the gaming business? Is it anything like the adult biz where there are lots of opportunities for smaller companies or is it much more monopolized by major players?

    Are games still hugely popular and a growing market or has the gaming industry plateaued?

              I thought so. I did read that it's just huge but I can't recall the source of the information. In terms of dollars I wonder how much larger.

              Is it still growing? I remember hearing about the extremely violent games that were coming out a few years ago that were breaking sales records. Is it still that hot?

                          How about in terms of downloadable online games versus for example the Xbox or those other offline systems you can buy. Which of the two is larger or are they all part of the same companies?

                              Doom 3 cost 15-20 million dollars to produce. That doesn't include the marketing costs either, I'm sure.

                                      The gaming industry is even bigger then the movie industry. And both are bigger than adult. All I know is that it is very hard to get a job in the gaming industry. If you are a programmer, you need to be the best. Same counts for designers. It costs millions to develop a single game, I don't think there is a place for small companies anymore...

                                          Wow, yes thanks. I remember playing games created by this company I forgot the name Electronic Arts. I suppose just the larger companies like EA dominate the gaming market?

                                                  Ok I think I'm getting a good idea now. If it costs that kind of money to make a high end game, it would be hard to find a few great programmers who get together and create their own game and become successful with it?

                                                                                  There are tons of good games made on alot smaller budgets still. Yes doom3 cost 15million, 2 years I think and 25 people to make it but they have bumped up the graphics technology by a few years from what they did. Thats the only reason it cost so much.

                                                                                              I had a friend who used to work for Westwood Studios and all he did all day was play video games...he was a game tester....he loved that job...

                                                                                                                                  There is still money to be made in the gaming industry outside of being a mainstream developer/publisher.

                                                                                                                                  The graphics in games alone are just as much work now of days as big cg animated movies. A level used to consist of rooms with a few items and textures slapped on. Now literally every detail has to be modelled, textures don't cut it anymore. Just take a look at Doom3.

                                                                                                                                  I suspect outsourcing this type of work is going to happen. Anyone can make a 3D model of a chair, not everyone can created a fluidly designed level.

                                                                                                                                  If you want to make money in the game industry, I'd suggest starting up a company doing something like this.
