Try HijackThis or if it is still there you will need to find a CWS shredder. Worse case scenario run a free scan from pestpatrol.com....find out what it is then follow the manual removal instructions

If this fails, Start -> MSdos Prompt -> format c:/ -> Y -> enter.

no! not the last option...

www.selfsearch.com is my homepage and it comes back to that even if i edit the registry,

Did they fail? then try this. This will work for sure. When i had the 'about:blank' i tried it and it worked.

1]Click Start -> Run -> type regedit.exe -> press enter.
2]Delete anything under 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Browser Helper Objects\

dont delete Browser Helper Objects! delete anything under it.

if you run XP just set your computer back a few days. Always works

bhodemon, cwshredder, hijackthis, ad-aware, and spybot search and destroy.

make sure to use the immunize option in spybot otherwise the crap just keeps coming back.
