I do the same (I live in halifax) but apparently in the US if you leave anything unlocked you're basically inviting someone to come into your home, decapitate you and sodomize your skull while your children and pets watch.

Right now I'm in a L.A., in a gated community w. 24 hour security, in a house with every door and window locked, and the house is wired up to say "WARNING - FRONT - DOOR - OPEN" (in that "you - have - 10 - minutes - to - reach - minimum - safe - distance" computerized femme o' doom(tm) voice) if you happen to crack it open. So much for me popping out the back patio for a midnight swim!

Sad to live in a place where you have to lock things.

6 months at community college for locksmithing and you can open any lock in seconds. For fun the class would line up 10 totally different locks and have races. They could get through all 10 in like a minute.
