Pike Street here in Downtown Long Beach, CA has free high speed wireless access all along the street so that you can go to any of the restaurants or cafe's and get online for free...

Someone has always occured to me, couldn't one use those free hotspots to surf illegal stuff? There's virtually no way to catch them. They must have some kind of filters in place no?

I can do both. Out in the sun in the day time and in strip clubs at night. LOL

Not that I'm aware of, you can surf wherever you want and these are run by volunteers that actually pay themself for the server and hi-speed internet connection for us to use freely. Besides, why would someone want do illegal stuff in public places?

                      To leave no trail.

if you were a hacker or pedophile or into other illegal online activities wouldn't you rather do it on some corner in your car with a laptop instead of at home?

                      That's what I'm talking about.

hotspots are usually in public places and you need to loggin to access and surf the web. I'm sure if someone was to do some illegal stuff, people looking over your shoulder would complain and he would get ckick out of the coffeshop in shame

There's actually ton's of places in the Dallas/Fort Worth area of Texas. Probably around half the major hotels in the area (100s!!!), the airports, 90% of public libraries, and growing. A lot of restaurants, coffee shops and clubs are getting into the action as well. Hell, even the IHOP's (International House Of Pancakes) around here are getting into it big time!

This list is a bit outdated (mainly 2004) but has links to other major US cities.
