The only people who are getting 90% of their SE traffic from Google are the ones that think Google is the only SE that matters.
That's bullshit, you can't just optimise for google it'll automaticly get you a better yahoo and msn position.

Fact is that I get over 95% of the search engine traffic from google. And that doesn't mean you can't find my sites on the same or better position on yahoo or msn.

Groove yeah I know you want to hear that other SEs get you 20% or more traffic because every trendy wannabe tells you yahoo and msn are up and comming but that's bullshit.

Check the public awstats (and they don't get less traffic):

But its kind of difficult to know what questions to ask to know if they really know their stuff...without knowing SEO yourself! Catch 22.

First and formost, ask for a written proposal.

                - In the proposal, you want to ask them to explain what their approach to SEO is.
                - How they would apply their approach to your site's/campaign.
                - Ask if they can give you guaranteed organic placement. If they say yes, they are most likely charletons. No one can make those guarantees unless its the engines themselves...so that should weed out some of the fakes.
                - SEO's charge differently, some charge per page they build, or per keyword they attempt to place, performance, or flat retainer. Narrow down how you are comfortable paying and then go from there.
                - Most serious SEO's will not show you their stuff, for obvious reasons. No one wants to lead people to successful pages within their niche to avoid codejackers and more competition. However, you can ask for references or even noting secondary listings that should be at the top that they feel comfortable with showing you.
                - Ask lots of questions so you understand exactly what their plan of attack is. If you get double talk and skirting of your specific questions, then you should likely look elsewhere.

Also, attend the SE tradeshows and see who's staying with what's going on out there. SES starts this next week...I'll be in San Jose for it. As a business owner, you too should investigate these events as well as they are also good places to find top shelf SEO's as well.

                  I think that's a bit flawed.

Any SEO that knows what they are doing would not divulge everything they know on paper, so then you don't have to pay him to do it for you.

All that link tells me is that http://awstats.sourceforge.net/ gets most of its traffic from Google.com. So what? That will also be the case for a large number of other sites which are well optimised for Google, but poorly optimised for Yahoo.

According to Wordtracker.com, Google accounts for 112 million searches daily or 35% of total web searches. However it is closely followed by Yahoo which accounts for 95 million or 30% of total web searches.

But if you want to believe that Google owns over 95% of the market that's fine by me

Groove, just check your stats and tell me what you see.

That will also be the case for a large number of other sites which are well optimised for Google, but poorly optimised for Yahoo.
Awstats isn't optimised for anything and there is no special optimisation difference that could do magic in yahoo but not in google, as I said before.

How should wordtracker know the real numbers, only yahoo can tell them.Yahoo is very popular in asia but not that popular in western countries.

Most normal western sites have over 90% google traffic.

Just buy some quality PR5+ hardlinks on related sites yourself instead of giving all your money to some SEOs who do the same, maybe even get your site google banned by "experimenting" but charge an arm and a leg.

                                      OK johndoebob, here's another source:

On Tuesday, March 23, 2004, WebSideStory examined a sample of over 25 million visits and found that Google had the top share of search referrals, 40.9 percent. It was followed by Yahoo at 27.4 percent, then MSN at 19.6 percent:

This suggestion is nuts. How the fuck is PR going to help without appropriate onsite and offsite optimisation?
If you aren't retarded you're able to use meta tags yourself and watch out that you don't get too spammy with keywords.

Just get a few links with a high PR with related content and the right keyword as linktext and you're done if the area isn't too competitive.Of cour you always got to have more than your competitors.

Nowdays the SEO market is much smoke around nothing.

Yahoo just lists your meta description. And there isn't much more to do beside keeping the target keyword in the content under 10% (better under 5%) and maybe optimising your directory names and internal linking structure.

If you've ever bought some hardlinks from quality sites with a good PR you'd know what it can do for you.

Also anything above 5% in my eyes is spammy.

No need for that.People just want to hear the complicated secrets that don't exist and not the easy way.

Why do you think guestbook/blog/ref spammers get an easy PR5+ on a page with almost zero content and are in the top positions?Magic seo tricks? No, just enough links and the right keywords as linktext if possible.
