    Linux on the workstation anyone?

    Going to install Suse 9.1 Personal Edition on an older computer tonight

    Anyone have experiences to share?

    Should I use another linux flavor instead (must be downloadable)?

      I have dual boot XP/RH1 on my laptop.

      Dual boot XP/Fedora 1 on my desktop.

      I haven't used any other linux flavors. But i'm happy with Fedora 1. apt-get is cool tool. But i actually do all my webmaster stuff on the windows side ( primarily because of photoshop. don't like gimp too much) and then all my programming on the linux side.

      I think there's more hardware support with the RH installs, but that's because I've only installed debian as my other linux flavor.

      I've heard good things about Suse 9 tho from my buddies who run it.

      Oh and the fedora core 1 and 2 are downloadable.

          I got a lindows (linspire.com) box and love it...next linux flavor I'm gonna mess with is xandros....

          I'm lazy, thus the purchase of a pre-packaged, easy-as-fuck linux dist....Debian + KDE is nice if you have the patience to set it up like a true geek...

              SuSe is a great workstation for the linux non-guru. However if you have some knowledge of linux I recommend a different distro.

              My choices are:

              Debian - Server
              Fedora - Workstation

                  heh... the CEO of lindows used to be my former CEO. Guess which dot com i used to work for? hehe

                  I've yet to check out the lindows distro. I've heard it's pretty cool for first time linux users. I'm gonna have to get me a free copy of that now. My first install of linux was RH 6.0 so i've been a RH man since.

                      Guess I'll start with Suse untill I get used to Linux

                      Thanks for the input... had not thought about apt-get, yum etc... Will have to check lindows too

                          I tried Mandrake Linux two days ago.
                          Didn't really like it.
                          To lazy to get used to it...
                          I will stick with good old XP.

                                          I have the Suse 9.1 pro cd's at my house from the boxed set, and have it dual booting on my workstation alongside xp, and it's what runs our dev server.

                                              I don't really use Linux. I just keep installing it and then formatting my hard drive again so I have more space for Windows apps...

                                                  Dont use suse 9.1 personal if you want to install any other apps (such as moz, or thunderbird, firefox, etc)... pain in the ass.
