Net porn domain under fire

Net porn domain under fire
by Pimp Cafe staff, Pimp Cafe

The incidence of the newly released plan by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names (ICANN) to put forward a net domain catered specifically to the adult world is garnering criticism, especially from internet veteran Karl Auerbach.

Auerbach, who is a former board member of ICANN dubbed the decision to approve xxx.com obscene and emphasized the need for ICANN to give way for socially positive domain names rather than ?helping pornographers profit?.

?Why should .xxx get precedence over schools, churches, civic groups, aboriginal communities, labor organizations, and artistic groups?? Auerbach wrote in his personal blog.

Other critiques called upon the ICANN approved domain as ?dangerous? as it could provoke censorship problems for years.

?The existence of dot-ex-ex-ex is likely to create a political and litigious firestorm? Lauren Weinstein, net privacy campaigner said.

Weinstein added that creating the domain will force all sexual sites into the .xxx domain and create conflict over what really constitutes as an ?adult site?. Conversely, sites that only have a minimal amount of adult content might be more reluctant to make the shift.

ICANN?s decision to create a .xxx domain took place last week. The approval came as a surprise to many since ICANN has on several occasions rejected the plan to proceed with an adult net domain.
