Important only because of oil. If they invested in some other technology, or form of fuel in this decade, we could minimize this region, and it's importance. Then atleast the industrialized world would be on another form, of hybrid, or fuel source. Leaving only the 2nd and 3rd world nations to worry about it.
Isreal doesn't need us over there in bases, or otherwise. They kicked the shit out of Lebannon, Syria, Eygpt, back in 1967 in what? How many days was it again? Yeah. Noone fucks with the Isreali's because they know that they will use the bomb they don't deny they have should someone come charging across their borders again.
The middle east situation's a stalemate. Iran or whomever else gets the bomb will just point it at the Isreali's, and they will point them back, or attack their factories, power plants, whatever as they've done in the past. Much like the cold war. If they all blow each other up, one less thing for Fox news to sensationalize, and the rest of the world to worry about.
As for this WW III nonsence. If that ever came to pass, it would most likely be the 'war to end all wars' literally. Especially if you believe in the Bible.
