They give you the ability of free speech BUT they also give you the consequences of your words along with it.
While I really have no interest in getting into this discussion I would like to say that there are in fact limits to freedom of speech.
Slander is one, creating a clear and present danger (yelling FIRE in a crowded theater) is another.
Taste should not be an issue when deciding what is legally allowed to be said and/or published. If you do not like porn then you don't have to view it. Same goes for cat burning videos.
Originally posted by 12clicks Lensman has every write to do anything on this board and while you have the right to protest it, it doesn't make YOU right. It just means you disagree with it.
Basically, that's what I said.
I'm not suggesting a private company's rights be taken away. I'm simply exercising my right to disagree with their policies on the point of censorship, nothing more. I don't like being told that I can't listen to Stern (I don't, but that's not the point). I don't like the idea that a handful of people might have the power to dictate to Rick Latona what he can and can't post any further than what is already in place. Where does that road end?
I don't like the fact that a team of snip-happy little ultra-religious wingnuts sit in an office somewhere and cut to pieces movies that should be protected under artistic merit, thus affecting my right to see and view what I want to see and view.
I don't like someone burning a country's flag, but I don't like the idea of it being made illegal for them to burn that flag.
I don't like a lot of shit that people spew out of their mouths on a daily basis, and I strongly disagree with much of it..... but I don't support when someone says it should be illegal for them to say it.
I realize I'm covering a wide range and variety of censorship and civil rights....... but I would need 20 different threads to cover each sub-point. Thank you for bearing with me.
Originally posted by 12clicks but that doesn't mean we CAN'T agree and support those decisions.
I would never suggest otherwise. I'm simply advising you (as in everyone here) to be cautious about the kinds of censorship we choose to toss our support to. Some censorship is sensible, but much of what "could" happen if left unchecked is pretty aweful in my view.
And like you, there are several people on this board whose opinions I find quite nauseating and abrasive to my sense of.... well, sense. Yet, if this were my board, I would not ban them for it.
I would not ban them
for being twits
I would not ban them
when they get the verbal shits
I would not ban them
with a fork
I would not ban them
Like a dork
I would not ban them
sam, I am.

First off, welcome to this discussion
As for the limits, so there should be.

Nothing wrong with that.

Actually, it IS taste which is the deciding factor and generally it is the taste of the population as a hole. They say porn is ok but as long as minors cannot access it.
Haven't you noticed that as the population as a whole comes to accept something that the content which gets seen on tv/heard on the radio/watch in the movies is more extreme (i use the term loosely) but yet more acceptable, for all ages.
A prime example is the movie rating standards... A movie which is rated AA now would have been an R rated movie 10 years ago but yet you dont hear anyone bitching about that...

CD, you can listen to stern as much as you want as long as he works within the rules established by the FCC. The logic that you won't accept is that if you put it to a vote, stern's right broadcast about anal sex during the morning drive would lose in a landslide. And if people who post here don't want to see dying kittens, they have every right to demand lensman stop it and lensman as a businessman can act or not on those demands.

I guess it depends on who is at the wheel, for me it wasnt so much about the posting of it but the positive attitude towards the video. I do believe that Rick and his crew DO have every right to do what they did and post whatever they want to, but to promote it in such a way is what what i found disappointing and im sure others did.

Where does the road for "artistic merit" end? Isnt nude modelling of underaged girls consider artistic and thus protected?
While i agree with you that movies on TBS are butchered and their voice-overs are the absolute worst you still have to respect the decission they've made, not to air such language and/or scenes, thats no reason to hate on them
More parents probably let their kids watch that station because of that, there has to be a reason why it is so widely syndicated

No arguement here. It is when these issues take on a political motivation that I raise an eyebrow mostly. And I would have liked to have seen the Stern issue "put to a vote" as you say. The results very well might shut people like me up. Maybe not though.
I would be more in support of having sanctions and restrictions rather than completely removing a show from the airwaves, but like I said before, in this case I don't know the full story of what went on. I do see Stern as being quite an advocate of free speech though, the guy's whole motif is to push the limit if not tickle the funnybone of that limit, isn't it?
Originally posted by 12clicks again, they are free to do what they want and you are free to watch another channel.
As I do, but I do not have to like that form of censorship and am certainly free to say so.
Right?
Originally posted by 12clicks I do. if you want to burn the flag, get the fuck out.
Well, that would be my likely response if I ever saw it happening first-hand too...... but removing the freedom of expression isn't something I support. Sorry. A lot of ignorant things get done and said in this world, in this country for that matter, and although I don't like it, removing a person's right to say it isn't something I support.
There could come a day when something YOU say or do irks another person. Imagine that they don't like what you said so much that they manage to make it illegal for you to state your opinion on whatever it was you said. Imagine.
Just imagine.

Sure they have. You may have missed such posts, and I've probably missed most of them myself. But a few did not escape my attention, and no I don't have links handy to them, but I know I've read them on this and several other boards over the years. People love to point and say "that shouldn't be allowed" or "I don't like what so and so said, they should be banned" etc. My whole deal here is about awareness, getting people to think a bit more........ how can that be wrong?

No government agency removed him from the airways. they sanctioned and fined him. And if you want to push the limits of what is socially acceptable, expect society to push back.

this is the current flaw of the leftist version of freedom of speech. there is NO freedom of *expression* protected in the constitution there is a freedom of *speech*
If some yoyo wants to express himself by burning the flag and is protected, why isn't my expression of kicking his ass protected?

Originally posted by notjoe Where does the road for "artistic merit" end? Isnt nude modelling of underaged girls consider artistic and thus protected?
No, I don't believe so, although lawyers could certainly argue that point. I'm sure they have, actually.
Artistic merit largely applies, at least in video content, to the presense (or lack of one) of a plot, a storyline, for the production. Case in point: There are plenty of movies out there that contain violence against kids, and underage nude content. Lots. Why are they allowed to exist? It is because they have artistic merit behind them, whereas a website that is there simply to glorify underage teens can't claim that same artistic merit because their sole purpose is to sexualize the teens, whereas the movie tells a story.
It's a rather fine line sometimes.

Hate on them? Man, I'm just stating an opinion, and I'm using them as one example of where censorship is occuring right now. I'm trying to raise awareness and get people thinking about the dangers of supporting too much censorship. Can there be too much censorship?
The answer is yes. There can.
Originally posted by notjoe More parents probably let their kids watch that station because of that, there has to be a reason why it is so widely syndicated
You'd think that at 2 am they could ease up on the extreme censorship just a little. I mean really, actors can say the words "Bitch" and "Ass" on daytime soaps these days. I would say to TBS that they need to get their heads out of their asses with the censorship bullshit.
Originally posted by 12clicks And if you want to push the limits of what is socially acceptable, expect society to push back.
I'm sure no one is more aware of the truth of that than Larry Flynt.

I would likely be right behind you ready to smack his buddies around..... and I'll hazard a guess that more than a few cops would look the other way while we did so.
But I still say the right to express oneself in such a manner should not be taken away. As someone said in another thread, there are veterans and patriots who actually burn the flag on the 4th of July to celebrate their right to do so. That right and rights like it were hard fought for and came at a high price, I won't support removing that right. (even if I don't like it)
Originally posted by 12clicks This could never happen. it *has* never happened. Having to imagine an argument is not an argument, its imagination.
Say "That shouldn't be allowed" or "He shouldn't be allowed to say that" enough times and maybe it will come about if enough other people agree with you. My question on that has always been "where does it end?"..... the answer is it never ends. If people choose to censor others and revoke their rights, they run the risk of being censored themselves.
It *can* happen. Even to you, and if it ever does, trust me it *will* suck.
I hope it never does.

If the government provides financial incentives to, or puts financial pressure on, a company (such as Clear Channel) to muzzle speech, then that is censorship. Censorship by proxy is still censorship.

PS. Anyone who gets upset about a cheap piece of cloth being burned, regardless of what pattern is printed on it, is an irrational animal. Stop placing imaginary importance on inanimate objects. A flags total value is about $1 worth of material.
All your outrage does is give anti-americans a tool; holding on to a silly taboo just gives it power.

No question it is a hot issue. (sorry about the bad pun)
It isn't the cost of the material, it is what the flag means, what it represents to some people. I can certainly see where they're coming from, those people who hold their country's freedoms and hard-won civil rights etc in highest regard.... and my own first instinct would be to bitchslap someone burning my country's flag..... but still in all that I can STILL respect their right to do it.
I would never support removing their right.... but I would exercise my choice to express my own opinion on what they're doing. :D

If someone burned your photo album the material is worthless , but the photo's are priceless right ?? same thing..

What makes you think it is censorship and not a business decission, to get more parents to allow the station in to their houses
Originally posted by notjoe What makes you think it is censorship and not a business decission, to get more parents to allow the station in to their houses
Why does it being a business decision exclude it from being a censorship issue?
It doesn't.
put it this way... If Lensman were to start deleting certain posts of yours because he didn't like what you were saying, all kinds of people here would be screaming censorship.
This board is a private business. So is that newspaper, so is that radio station. The public reads or listens to all, and censorship is censorship. The paper/radio station has the right to censor the comic or the show, and I have a right to disagree with their choice, and I have made my disagreement known.

A flag is not freedom.
A flag is not civil rights.
A flag is just a flag.
The meaning assigned is imaginary. If you let your imagination get you upset, or let other people use your imagination to get you upset, then you're just giving them power over your emotions.
Why give people who want to piss you off an easy way to do it?
Keep your ideals seperate from any material symbols. Nobody can burn your ideals.

Most photo albums are unique. Few or no copys. And if it was *my* photo album that implies it is *my* property. To burn it would be theft and vandalism.
But flag is not unique. There are millions of copies of it.
If someone burns their own flag, who cares?
If someone burned their own copy of picture I liked, I couldn't care less. Even if it was a picture of my kitty. As long as I still have my own copy, it doesn't affect me.
If someone wants to burn a picture of me, ok.
I simply don't care what other people do with their own property.

It wasn't a random slur. What humans use to distance ourselves from other animals is the ability to think rationally. When you abandon thinking rationally in favor of kneejerk reactions and emotional urges, you are acting more like an 'irrational animal' than a man.
I am just suggesting to those that get upset over something as harmless as flag-burning to think rationally about it, and take the power back - away from the people who are trying to piss you off. The more mad it makes you, the better for them. So who's purpose does the taboo serve?
They're not burning your freedom or your veterans. It's only a piece of cheap cloth, probably made in china; and in cases of iraqis or whoever burning it, it's probably never even been on american soil. So how is that 'America'?
