Isn't that always the way? We finally get an a/c unit for my office's window, and now I'm watching the grey clouds roll in. What's with that, eh?
Got a Window a/c, now the clouds are coming in!

(that's your little drum roll)
Well, I got to use it for about 20 minutes. It cools VERY nicely and quickly! There's a little thermostat on it you can set it to, or you can just use the fan. The only problem is that it's kind of taped into the window frame, since it's an old aluminum swing-open window. hehehemail: [email protected]Comment

hehe I wish! If I got one of those, I'd hate to get the ducts cleaned and probably get a new furnace while I'm at it, so I opted for the window option.Originally posted by the Shemp

Naughty JMan!
Seriously, does anyone else have one of these window units? Mine seems awfully noisy, but I don't know how noisy they are supposed to be. :\email: [email protected]Comment

I have one. Yes, they're noisy but the noise is constant so you do tend to get used to it after a while.Originally posted by Elli

I remember the day I installed it... it was 35 C out, about 7 years ago, I had been sweltering in the heat for a long time here with just a 3 speed fan for cooling...... UHG. The second I got it in the window and turned it on it was like AHHHHHHH..... amazing.

Sooo nice!
I would liken the sound to that of an old fridge. But then, it's still worth it.

Well, like I stated before, if I get a central system for this old farmhouse, I'll probably have to get all the ducting redone and also a new furnace. That's a huge outlay of money at one time, and frankly, there's isn't that much of it to go around at the moment. Not only that, but the top floor is the only really unbearable spot during the day, and only one of the rooms on that floor is used at that time. SO I opted for the window unit option.Originally posted by Jimmie
they still sale window units? why dont u people invest in central heat & air, much better on the electric bill and will cool/heat the entire house.

You could consider a whole house attic fan. Basically just sucks the air from the bottom through the top in one Whoosh. But they're 'spensive.
I have central heat and air, but the one thermostat is in the living room at the back of the house. Bedroom is upstairs at the front of the house. So in the mornin, I roast in bed with the sun blazing in and the AC doesnt kick in anyway. bah.. So I sleep with a fan on anyway. I guess I need a remote thermostat or a helper monkey.Comment

My attic fan ran about $125 at Lowes a few years back, not sure what they cost now. If you run it on high and open a window it's a wind tunnel. It's great to blow the heat out of the house before running the air-conditioner. The house cools quicker and the AC doesn't have to work as hard. The difference in your electric bill will more than pay back the cost of the fan..Comment
