dog experts: ive got a question..

Im looking for the best breed of dog for a friend:

These are the keywords we are looking for:

Mellow, loyal to its owner and family - family dog, medium sized, low fur maintenance, easy with small kids(!) and other animals.

No terrier (too nervous and too much hunting instincts) (not even a lab!!)..

    Any suggestions?

stay with a mut ...they are normally the smartest, most playful, and loving.
Or if you want full breed...try something like a Golden Retriever

I am not a dog expert by any means buy in my experience around dogs i have found golden retrievers to be very good pets.
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60. Let me repeat... A 120 x 60 button and no more that 3 lines of DEFAULT SIZE AND COLOR text.

This would be my choice, unless you'd rather have a mutt. Mutts kick ass.

yup.. thats what im telling him but a labrador or a retriever is too big and too furry for his standards.

Chinese Shar-pei. Best dog I ever had. They are prone to skin infections and may need an occasional surgery to get the skin flaps out of their eyes however.

                                go through this list:

                                http://www.akc.org/breeds/recbreeds/list.cfm

and if you get a dog, make sure you train it. you can find training pretty cheap. mine was only $80 for a 8 week course.

German Shepherds are awesome.. They are loyal, protective, very intelligent, and in most cases a great family dog. They do have high fur upkeep tho. I have a 7 month old male german shepherd and it took me less than one week to house break him. This is truely the most intelligent dog I have ever owned. He picks up on everything.

I have a beagle, he was a bit wild and disobedient when he was young, but now he's fine. When he's at home he's usually sleeping or following you around the house.

And smaller too...that lowers your options a lot. I was looking for a similar dog when I got mine (small and low fur maintenance) and ended up getting a beagle.

I kept an eye on the local shelters' websites for 3 months before I found a dog I liked, then I boogied on down there and tried her on for size. They actually encourage you to bring any dog you already have with you, to see how they get along, and they let you walk them all afternoon if you like, to see how you match up.

As for calm and mellow and good tempered, our shih tzu is wonderful, but a bit hyper. He loves walks and he's super smart, and never bites at all. Also my mom's Retriever is a great dog, but dumb as rocks. Good hearted, though.

try looking at http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/abc.htm , you can check out breeds and get info on them, but let me suggest a Staffie this isn't your typical terrier and it is NOT a pitbull in anyway. I know you said no terriers, but this isn't a rat terrier or anything like it We have owned them in the past and they are great family pets.

We almost got one, but they count as a "Dangerous Breed", so there are special bylaws and regulations, and a 400$ a year license fee. Make sure you check what your local bylaws are before you choose a breed with the locking jaw capability.

Best dog I have ever owned in my life.

Ive heard him bark maybe 5 times total. I take him on walks for serveral miles with no leash (he keeps his head right by my side, even when people walk by or come up and pet him). He doesn't chew shit up, He came already house broken and has never went inside, He prefers to lay on the floor all day next to me while im at the computer. Many many other good things. It seams all they do is want to please and show you more affection from a dog that I have ever felt. He even lets my cat sleep on him or right next to him!

Its cool as hell to watch him run at 40+ MPH

I've heard super good things about greyhounds. Actually, alot of ranchers are getting them now. Seems they absolutly hate coyotes and run them off . I've also heard that they are very loyal and make reallly nice low maintenence pets.

These are the keywords we are looking for:

No terrier (too nervous and too much hunting instincts) (not even a lab!!)..

They are combining different breeds with the poodle. What they end up with are dogs with one breeds manerisms and then, like the poodle, they don't shed and are hypo-allergenic. I fell in love with a small version of the labradoodle (labradore and poodle) and the shipoo (shit-su and poodle). I just got a papillion or I'd be tempted.
