The Australian government has questioned claims that interim Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi shot dead six prisoners shortly before the handover of power from coalition forces.
The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age reported that two witnesses saw Dr Allawi pull a pistol and execute suspected insurgents at a Baghdad police station in the week before last month's handover.
Journalist Paul McGeough, who wrote the story, has left Iraq, but stands by his story.
"If you have a story like this, it's not a good idea to remain in the country," McGeough told Ten News.
