I know that both friends that went told me some crazy stuff, like pissing on your own hands in order to toughen up the skin
As for being dangerous..... one of the guys that I know that did it lost two joints off of one pinky when he caught it in a line on a winch.
... meanwhile, he made $35k in 2 months at 20 years old... and had a hell of an adventure... so he thinks that it was worth it.
