I'm not sure anyone's done any benchmark tests though it'd be interesting to see.

You can assume that they both likely have the same amount of input and work. Vbulletin would have the money to put into it, and PHPBB would have many GNU contributors.

        Cheers,
        Matt

it's still faster than the phpbb I'm using on darkcavern.com/forum

so it's most likely just a matter of putting the board on it's own server to make it faster, rather than the software?

how much traffic are you expecting that you are so worried about speed?

Um, it pretty much works like VB does..... unless I'm missing something.

For the cost, phpBB is excellent. and there's a good enough support base for it.

IF I had the money, I'd use vb, but only if I had the money to spare.

it's gotten up to 70 or so users at any one time, usually another 70 in the live chat. It could get bigger.

Faster is always better when it comes to growing sites.

i have about 10 boards all using phpbb and have a decent load of traffic mainstream ones of coarse. As far as huge board I would venture to guess that the server and other variables are a bigger factor than the scripts them self.

phpbb is faster because of the way its been coded , its a free software package and as such when it was first designed wasnt exactly do so with security in mind .. i would say its a lighter version of Vbulletin

other things depend on your hosting , ur configuration and so on

                              phpBB would get my vote.

                              1) It has tons of contributors, improving it and finding bugs (as with any open-source project)

                              2) There are tons of user-uploaded mods, hacks and styles

                              3) I've found phpBB's code to be quicker to hack/modify as well as customize. I set up one from scratch, crated my design style, customized access lists, etc.....every option of their Admin...all in about 1 hour.

I've seen phpBB servers with 10,000s of users and obviously vBulletin here has way more than that.

Run the latest MySQL and you shouldnt have performance issues unless your server is really outdated or misconfigured.

A lot of people say that Vbulletin is "a lot more secure", although whenever there is a safety hole in PHPBB, theres always a team of developers working to fix it - Jelsoft are paid to go over their code 24/7 - not improve it until you pay again.

Better than vB and phpBB is probably Invision Board. Easier on server resources than either and just as feature packed as vB.

The bigger boards run on at least two servers, one is for just the database.
