As a parent you always let the parent handle the situation. If that bus driver had told me what happend with my child nad how he acted my son would have got a first class ass whippin in front of those other kids! He wouldnt be able to sit for a week! You don't talk to grown up like that and you dont touch others people kids like that! Kids will be kids and you have to remember that there kids, they act different in certain company. My Son acts totally different towards his mother (were divorced) than he does with me and she knows it. Kids are smart and know what they can get away with other people. Everybody is acting like the bus driver beat the kid. He didn't. He restrained and slapped the kid once. He didn't kick, punch, choke, throw him or do anything that would cause any injury. The kid wasn't hurt nor afraid.

The charges in the case seem to indicate that law enforcement sympathizes with the bus driver and that the kids need to be punished further. Clearly the kids aren't being disciplined at home. Nobody but their parents can discipline them (as many in this thread have agreed) and they're not doing that. The bus driver's reaction is a reaction that many normal men would have in that situation. It was one of complete frustration at a group of kids that wouldn't sit in their seats and thought it ok to degrade him with foul language.

If the kids aren't punished they'll think they can repeat that behavior. A kid like that 'having balls' to mouth off a bus driver is the same kind of kid that eventually won't listen to police or obey the law. I would venture to say that these kids have probably been in trouble before...with the law or other adults or kids.

Everything you mentioned has a lot to do with parenting. Those kids that go shooting up schools usually have parents that don't have a clue what they're kids are doing. They don't check their kids to see if they're doing drugs and they don't notice that cache of guns under their kids bed.

Kids are kids... and need to be treated in a way that will make them grow into healthy young adults.

Kids that are raped growing up rarely do the same thing to others. They are however, often traumatized or 'fucked up'. Oprah was raped as a child. Like most rape victims she turned out fine. But again, if they're being tied up and raped by their parents that's a parenting issue. Parents raping their kids will likely produce screwed up kids. That has everything to do with parenting. Little update, according to CNN the charges were made BEFORE seeing that tape. When they decided to charge the boys with assault and the bus driver with a misdemeanor all they had was his word against theirs.

Now that the video has been released they are "rethinking the judgement".

Pick the kids up. Drop the kids off. Driving a school bus sounds easy, right?

Wrong, said Beverly Schools' Transportation Director, Bill Burke.

Bus drivers have to go through a two-month training course and a rigorous license test before taking the wheel of one of the big yellow buses, said Burke.

Once they have their licenses, they are still subjected to extensive yearly physicals and random drug tests. If drivers miss a drug test, they're immediately disqualified from driving.

And, said Burke, it takes a special kind of person to be equal parts machinery operator, safety official and babysitter all rolled into one.

The men and women who drive Beverly's buses do the job for all kinds of reasons, said Burke. Some of them are retirees who are looking for a part-time job. Others are parents who have children in the school system, or who stayed on as drivers after their children grew up.

Many have been driving for years' like Beverly Browning, who after more than 24 years as a bus driver makes exactly the same wage as this year's newest recruit, John Ostrander. Carl Strout is somewhere in the middle.

"Carl's a rookie. He's only been here about 10 years," said Burke.

Good bus drivers are hard to find, said Burke, especially since Beverly's salary hovers around $13, a dollar or two less than surrounding communities pay. Bus monitors, who make $8.20 an hour, are even harder to find.

Although some retirees, like Strout, have their own health insurance, the positions would be nearly impossible to fill if it did not come with a benefits package, said Burke.

"If they ever did that we would lose half our staff," he laughed. "You would not believe how hard it is to get people. These guys and girls do a heck of a job."

Lives are at stake on the school bus

In the yellow room on wheels - the school bus - bad behavior can be more than distracting. It can be dangerous.

"I'd say 90 percent of accidents involving school buses are because the driver has been distracted," said Jimmy Young, a bus driver and trainer with the Alachua County school district.

"If a teacher has a bad day in the classroom, no one dies," said Young, 52, one of about 185 drivers on 165 routes in the school system. "If I have a bad day, I've got the safety of 78 kids I'm responsible for. Driving the bus comes first. You don't try to drive and handle the situation at the same time."

During the 2003-2004 school year, the handling of "situations" by school administrators resulted in 1,017 bus suspensions. Losing bus privileges could range from a few days to weeks or months, depending on the severity of the offense, said David Deas, transportation manager for Alachua County schools.

"We've had students kicked off the bus for a year," he said.

That could happen, Deas said, in cases in which a student has been suspended from a bus multiple times and continues to be written up for causing trouble on the bus.

He said some of the more common infractions that could cause bus suspension include fighting, failure to remain seated and throwing things out the windows. There even have been cases in which students have opened the rear door of the bus and jumped out, he said.

Young, who drives elementary, middle and high school routes, said he's heard of bus drivers being spat upon, cussed out and hit on the head with flashlight batteries. Drivers tend to agree that middle-school students are the worst offenders, he said.

"Some of these drivers take some real abuse," Young said. "That's why we lose some drivers. They say it just isn't worth it."

On his first day on the job six years ago, he said, he hadn't driven out of the school traffic circle before some of the riders on the bus started talking trash to him.

"They were saying things like, 'Yo, dog, turn the radio on,'" said Young, who served in the U.S. Marines for 13 years. "I stopped the bus, got up and said I'm not 'yo dog.' I'm Mr. Young, or Mr. Jimmy, and my job is to get you to school and home safely and on time. Your job is to obey the rules."

Setting the ground rules early on has made his job easier, Young said. In six years, he said, he has written referrals only six times - including once for inappropriate touching and another when an elementary student punched another child.

A bus driver writes up an offending student, but the discipline is handled through deans at the individual schools. Deas said for minor offenses, such as chewing gum, a student might get referred three or four times before being suspended from the bus. Suspension would follow other efforts to deal with the problem, he said, such as a conference with the student and parents.

Young said that when he trains new drivers, he advises them not to overuse the referral process. Gaining the students' respect from the start will go further in yielding cooperation, he said.

"Write-ups should be the last resort," he said. "When they suspend these kids off the bus, it's more punishment on the parents because then they have to find a way to get their kids to school."

He said he prefers to work with students and their parents.

"Instead of writing their kid up, I say I'll give you a courtesy call and see if you could handle this at home," he said. "And one thing kids need to understand is that you're not out of school while you're still on the bus."

Deas agreed, saying the bus is "an extension of the school. The same rules apply."

Because of potentially deadly consequences for bus misbehavior, zero tolerance should be a district policy, said Tina Pinkoson, chairwoman of the Alachua County School Board.

"There are lives at stake," said Pinkoson, who has described driving a bus as one of the most difficult jobs in the schools. "And you can't sit them in time out on the bus."

Driver Out of Work After Kids Let Off Bus

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. - A school bus driver is out of work after throwing a group of little children off miles from their destination.

At least 14 kids -- ages 5-through-9 -- had left Melwood Elementary School in Upper Marlboro Thursday, and were heading for their homes and a daycare center.

They were reportedly misbehaving and saying things about the driver.

When the bus got to Cheryl and Brooklee drives -- about three miles from the school -- the driver apparently had enough, and let everyone off.

Nearby residents saw the confused children and helped them. None of the kids were hurt.

A Prince George's school spokesman says the driver later quit after meeting with officials.

A Zeeland special-needs preschool student was left on a school bus for at least two hours on Wednesday. A school bus driver has since been fired and another has been suspended for three days.

Some school districts have had to deal with more than one incident like this. 24 Hour News 8 has found a few that are going with a zero tolerance policy.

Three-year-old Antonio Alonso was left alone on a Holland school bus in April 2003. And it wasn't the first time it happened that school year.

School officials had had enough, so they put the word out to drivers.

"If you don't check your bus everyday, it's ground for immediate dismissal," Holland School Assistant Superintendent Jim Sullivan told 24 Hour News 8.

Last school year, another student was left behind and the driver of that school bus was fired.

For Holland School officials, proving a driver doesn't check his or her bus is empty is simple. Each bus is equipped with a video camera that records everything that goes on in the vehicle, from the time the engine is turned on at the beginning of the day, to 15 minutes after the bus is parked at the end of the day.

Sullivan says the bus drivers are "required to get out of their seats, walk from the front to the back, checking every seat, checking under the seat, to make sure there are not students left."

The district's zero tolerance policy goes so far as to fire any driver who gets caught failing to make the check. And now, district officials randomly check the video camera tapes to make sure drivers are doing their job.

"The emphasis that we put on it has combined to make the drivers more alert?more aware. And that's been our success. Our drivers have taken this very seriously," adds Sullivan.

The Holland School District is not alone in their zero tolerance policy.

Dean Transportation - which has contracts with the intermediate school districts in Kent and Ottawa counties, and will take over bus services for the entire Grand Rapids school district next year - also fires drivers who leave kids on buses.

A Dean spokesperson says drivers are required several times a day to look not only for kids but evidence, such as backpacks and lunch boxes, that may indicate a child is still on the bus.

As for changes to policies in Zeeland, school officials have not returned calls made by 24 Hour News 8.
