Offer lot little clips or just one big one & HD question

I'll be offering three 10min clips to viewers. in low medium and high res. Should I offer just an one download or also little clips with thumbnails as so many sites still do? Is this just "old school". ANd if so what lengths? 1 min,3 min? and is this still necessary? It will double the hard drive space I need to pay for.

Also, I'm thinking of offering true HD 1280 x 720 long, as my largest size, above the medium 640 x 360 long for cable modem. Is this stupid? It will also take a large amount of my hard drive space and hence money. Thanks!

Welcome to the conundrum of HD on the Internet. There are two points to consider. Your screen size (resolution) is a good question.

However, screen size is moot if you don't offer a high enough bit rate on the encode.

My guess is that a 2000K WMV file at about 10 minutes long will be 300 MB. Hard drive space should be the least of your concerns. That size file will require and consume a shitload of bandwidth if you have good traffic.

Oh, and your average user won't be able to work with a file that size. At least not stream it.

In all liklihood, you will end up encoding at much lower than 2000K, which will mitigate all the benefits of HD.

Shit, dude. That'll be so much fucking work encoding three movies for every one movie. You'll go nuts. Buy a quadcore processor is all I can say. And then look for hosting companies that either use, Flash Media Server, Windows Media Services or Real Networks, and then encode the movies for multibitrate streaming. That way, you'll only have to encode a single clip and it will stream at whatever rate the user is connected at. Stream servers are more expensive. I don't use them, but for what you're talking about, that's the way to go.

Ok, I just decided not to go HD, so offering one 10 min mwv file. I think it'll be either 90 or 110mb. Offer just whole thing as one download or break it up also into 4 clips? thanks.
