The origin of "Dagwolf"
Back in the old days of Telnet clients and 386's, I often used the nick "blackwolf"on irc. If that was taken, I was "Redwolf". After AOL hit the internet, I found it harder and harder to log into IRC with my chosen nicknames; one time, when I could find no satisfactory variation, I screamed, "Dadgummit, wolf!" and typed dagwolf in as a contraction of the same.
Well, I've never had a problem since with someone taking my nick. Now this could be because, as I later discovered, "dag" is an australian word for a piece of shit dangling from a sheep's ass, the equivalent of the american "dingleberry". And a Brit once told me that a "dagwolf" was slang for a person who eats ass.
That nagged at me for a few years, until recently when I discovered that "Dagwolf" is Dutch for "Day Wolf". Now, that suits me just fine.

Everyones nicknames used to be something that you could call them by when you see them on a show floor.
Now we got all these surfers or wannabe webmasters, who use "creative" phrases as their nicks. You can easily tell they will not make a name in the industry or they will not even show up at the webmaster gatherings.
Only exception I've seen was Amputate Your Head, which we ended up calling "Amp" anyway, so he too got his true nickname
