I was really bored one night and it was an insane thunderstorm. What I did was I set my camera to continuous shooting mode. I set up the camera on a tripod. Set manual exposure to 1 second and F2.8 (largest aperature). I just held down the shutter button and let it tack 1 second exposures back to back and out of about 600 pictures this was THE ONE!!! I guess I got lucky :-)
I'd love to give lightning photography a try, but all I have are the new fangled electronically controlled cameras... they're not rugged enough to be in the middle of a storm.
They say the best way is to chase the lightning into rural areas where there is no ambient light, hold the shutter open (with a remote release) and then close it as soon as you see the flash.
I guess your way is just as good, since it's not wasting expensive film.
Yeah I got lucky with this shot. Now I took that pic a couple years ago. I have a 5 MegaPixel Canon PowerShot G5 now. Next big thunderstorm I'm gonna set up my tripod in that same spot and just keep making back to back 1 second exposures hoping one of em catches some nice lightning. I actually have about 20 lightnind shots but they all suck compared to the one I posted on here. It just takes patience. I could do back to back 15 second exposures but anything 1.3 seconds and longer the camera has to process them between shots so 1 second is perfect! Also since at night it's hard to digital camera's to focus, it's best (if it has an electronic manual focus) to set it to infinity.

hahaha LOL. Well I'd have to say the lightning in that pic seemed VERY close! In literal terms I'd use the zoom on my camera, but then when it struck, it would be off to the side or somethin. I got SO lucky with that shot!!

My Ex-husband SKULL-BUITRE ran off to Colombia with OUR money and screwed me after I helped him build OUR business.
He is hiding in Colombia and never paid the settlement $ from our divorce!
