Why do so many black people....

Why do the majority of black people have to act like they were all raised in the fucking ghetto smack dab in the middle of Compton?

I actually asked a few black people this question a few minutes ago. They told me that they were raised in Compton and moved here to get away from it all.

My reply as I walked away?

"There is a saying......You can take the blacks out of the ghetto but you can never take the ghetto out of the blacks. If you moved here to get away from it, then perhaps you should have checked that shit at the door when you arrived."

I find it a real shame that the media, MTV,...whoever....Has helped build such a stereotype of black people to the point where people think it's cool to act like that.

There?s nothing wrong with being black?But just because your skin is dark does not mean that you have to act like a gangbanger.

This thread is likely to cause a bunch of idiots to spark a racist discussion and bash me so I'm leaving now. Going to Costco to buy rope in bulk quantities.

This thread reminds me of a time I was watching Def Comedy Jam and I heard something that actually disturbed me.

The comedian was your typical.."this is how a black guy *fill in the blank* vs how a white guy *fill in the black* type comedian.

Anyway his comparison for the day was a white kid at graduation walking across the stage solemnly getting their diploma..sad because they knew they had 4 more years of school ahead of them...black kid at graduation, is up on the stage dancing across it as he got his diploma because he knew he was through with that school shit.
The audience was roaring with laughter.

They actually found it funny that the white kid was sad because he was going to get a college education vs the black kid who was happy he wasn't.

No matter what, a person is always their surroundings. If they hang out with enough individuals speaking proper, they will too. If they speak to people who speak with heavy slang via phone, face to face, etc... The speech patterns will be harder to lose.

On the flipside, I've also noticed a lot of educated white people who speak perfect english, yet once they are out drinking or in a more chaotic environment, they let loose with the expletives as if the word "fuck" had replaces the word "the".

One of my good friends is black, and he is educated, an electrical engineer as am I. Never speaks like he's from the "ghetto" and is one of the most humble and coolest guys I know. The majority of black people don't speak that way, just the ones that you have either watched on television or had encoutners with, aybe you should change your surroundings or the class of people that you hang around.

You're right, just because my skin is dark I don't have to talk like a gangbanger, nor do I. None of my friends that I have now speak that way either and I was raised in the "black side" of town.

They have there own culture. The speak different, they live different, they have different morals. Whites relax in the back yard, blacks hang out in the front yard(chairs and all!). Black folks are all showmen. To them there "profile" is everything! That is where the old saying came from (Driving a cadillac, and living in a shack). I live in a black neighborhood, and as a rule the above is true. They spend nothing on there homes upkeep, yet buy extremely expensive cars. I also notice that the parents spend little, or no time whith there kids. Black parents also will use extreme foul language in front of there small kids, and grandchildren. They also have no consideration of other folks musical likes, and dislikes. They will sit at the red light playing the most filthy rap extremely load with whites sitting there looking at them like scum. They have no shame. Call it racist or what you like, but its a fact !

It's being able to turn it off and on like a switch. If you're on the corner talking with a bunch of people who know nothing but ebonics then how else would you communicate with them?

It's the exact same thing that the majority of other people do while they are at work, they talk the talk but when they get home all that crap is left at the door.

I love the stereotypes in this thread.

First of all, I can only talk about what I, personally, do or don't do.

I pretty much speak to black and white people all the same. However, if I'm speaking to a black person that I know well...like my boyfriend or a very close friend for instance...I will use popular urban slang. I might say "What's good?" instead of a "Hey, what's up?" Why wouldn't I say "what's good?" to a white person that I don't know in a general conversation? It's mainly because I want the conversation to flow. I don't want to have to pause and explain what I'm saying/asking. I want to speak in a general dialect that I'm sure they and I will both understand without the need for pause or explanation.

We all got off on the speech thing, but I'm not even 100% sure what AaronM even meant by:

He may have been speaking about some other behavior and not even referring to speech patterns, so maybe we need a little more clarification before jumping all over his topic.

I know exactly what you mean. The same way I am. I was born and raised in Nigeria, came out to the U.S when i was in my teens. I learned good english first, then i started to mess with the slang. There is nothing wrong with slang, just like everything in life, you have to know when it is necessary and when it is not.

first & foremost let me say this: i don't like what hip-hop has done to black culture. the attitudes & behaviors it supports perpetuate the ills of black culture in america & also perpetuate stereotypes that are seen & accepted around the world. hip-hop is POWERFUL - probably one of the most powerful forms of muscial expression the world has EVER seen. it has permeated all walks of life & is inescapable.... which is y it is so sad that it used in such a wreckless manner.

people who run the media aren't too concerned about the effect they have on who's watching tv, they are concerned about profits. if its hot right now, they will feed on it & if that means acting "ghetto" because that's the current trend, they will do it. plug in a different type of music & the principle is the same, MTV & the rest are pressed about $$$ not about how those who are NOT buying feel.

oh, and i know there is nothing wrong with being black, it quite actually is BETTER to have dark skin... especially with the eroding ozone layer, etc. did you know that people with dark skin tones rarely (if ever?) get skin cancer? ah, the benefits of melenin that are never addressed by the media
