Unless you have to don't stay in central London if you wanna save a little money. You can get a daily bus/tube/train pass for very little and it only takes 30 mins or less from most of the inner M25 to get to the center of town.

Depends what you wanna spend. Places like Travellers Inns are comfy if a little sterile and usually no dearer than some of the rat infested private crap you can find.
