    Mexican Official Wants Border Eliminated

    Mexican Official Wants Border Eliminated
    Wednesday, June 30, 2004

LOS ANGELES ? A new man is in charge of border relations for Mexico and he has some radical ideas for change at the border with the United States.

Arturo Gonzalez Cruz (search), a 52-year-old Tijuana businessman, says many improvements are needed at the border to benefit trade, including creating more lanes and adding border crossings. Ultimately, Cruz says flat out, he wants to see the border disappear.

But critics say not so fast.

"It is clear that their objective is to affect the domestic policies of the U.S. ... and in a way that makes it easier for people who come to the U.S. illegally to get away with breaking the law number one, and to get access to all sorts of government benefits," said Ira Mehlman, spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (search).

About 3 million illegal immigrants cross the border from Mexico into the United States each year. Cruz's office says it doesn't deal with that issue, despite the fact he will be in charge of fostering better channels of communication between people involved in border issues.

The last man who had Cruz's job resigned quietly after complaining his colleagues in Mexico City didn't have a good understanding of the border.

Good idea. The border doesn't stop anyone now anyways. Most of states that border Mexico were stolen from them too.

It's only a matter of time for both the border to Mexico and the border to Canada to disappear *and* for our countries to accept a common currency based on the dollar.

All just stops on our journey to the New World Order. Enjoy.
Beat it. Nothing to see here.

Actually, this is a better idea than it seems.

A few years ago, the Canadian and U.S. government had begun preliminary talks about abolishing the Canada/U.S. border.

In my opinion, the concept was good, no border but still some sort of border patrol. People waltzing from one side of the border to the other. Great for tourism and trade. Sure, dope and illegal immigrants would get accross. But they do get accross already so no huge difference there. In a nutshell, they had a concept down and they saw more pros than cons.

                      Then came September 11.

All of a sudden, Bush and his cronies got completely paranoid. Borders where almost shut down, waiting periods at both borders became completely out of hand.

Did it solve illegal border crossing? No

Did it even reduce illegal border crossing? Not by a long shot.

It didn't do much a dent in the business of drug smugglers either.

To sum it up, the Bush border policies didn't change shit.

So why not tear down the borders? Mexico is part of NAFTA and as such, there's lots of trade going on between the U.S. and Mexico. Sure, do put a border patrol and do put some form of control on the U.S. side to continue the "war on drugs" or the war on "illegal aliens" or the war on whatever Bush is paranoid about today. The benefits in the long term would far outweight the disadvantages.

That thing is useless anyways, has holes in it everywhere. I have heard stories of people crossing through the holes to goto work because the wait to cross legally are to long and they would be late. But god forbid we get a better border because the Mexicans would think we are trying to keep them out!
