It must be some sort of hybrid of the polyphemous moth, the description of the polyphemous moth doesn't fit this moth.Originally posted by Tala
That's because it's not a butterfly, Kevin. It's a polyphemous moth, and I have them all over the place in Tennessee.
Read more about it
I can't even imagine a moth that fucking big landing on me or even flying near me...I really think I would have a heart attack! I get cold sweats just thinking about it! Yuck!

That's a moth, not a butterfly... Look at the thorax, and the antennae. I would be curious what type. I'll look into it

It's a Cecropia moth, just out of it's coccon and in great shape.
One of north americas prettiest moths. I always love seeing those things.

I was getting ready to say that ;) We have some that look like JayMan's picture. I usually find out about them because they come to the windows to get to the light and they sound like huge birds!Originally posted by cspdinc
its not a butterfly its a moth... big difference. its a night flyer. I hav ecaught a few growing up the MOST beautifull is a Luna Moth- emerald green with long swallowtail like tails but bigger and more swept.
We have several Luna moths for a few months a year, they are just beautiful to look at.
Jayman, that is such a neat thing for your son to get to see up close - a truly beautiful and HUGE specimin

Im in Indiana too and we see them like that. The part I hate is when they are the thick green worms that crawl around with little spikes on their back.Comment
