Questions you should ask when looking for a new host....in THIS ORDER

    1) Tell me about your network. Is it multihomed, which providers, how much capacity? Are you reselling someone else's bandwidth or do you have contracts with the actual tier 1 providers?

    2) Tell me about your datacenter. Spare parts on hand? Backup power? Can you actually put your hands on my server or are you just a home office tech who has to make cage calls to get things done.

    3) How many techs do you have working for you and are they there 24/7? When I turn in a ticket at 3am is there an actual person there to look at it, or are you a one man show and when I turn in a ticket it'll beep you?

    4) How much does it cost?

Thank you, that will be 2 bits for the advice.

#5 Do you host any "real" players in the industry? If yes you just answered the first 3 questions without asking them

Some of those "players" in the industry have changed hosts a few times in the past couple of years.....so that's not always the best question to ask.

yeah, and some of those "players" are taken care of by certain hosts better than regular clients...even though no one would EVER admit that

i know webair plays jesus, while tons of people on here are the apostles, sticking by them through thick and thin...but reality is, TONS of people have walked away terribly unhappy with webair...and when someone tries to tell their story, they get preached at by one of the apostles

Great....I'll take 3 dedicated servers (dual xeons with 174GB SCSI's and 2 GB RAM each) and 200mbps of bandwidth.

I'll cut you a check for the $27 once its all setup ok? If you do a rush job I'll go ahead and write the check for an even $30.

Most "players" have their own inhouse sysadmins to handle issues with their servers, so they dont depend on techsupport as much, unless there is some kind of network issue.

I use and recommend Webair for hosting.

                          Hello Ray,

Webair's reputation was tarnished over a recient O'ooops with a clients corrupted back-up. Seem's the clients site was not backed up for months. Webair is considered a fully managed premium hosting company but Webair's mishandling was inexcusable.
I am courious if Webair's crutial mistake was a isolated event or did other webmasters experience it?

*Mike is aware of the situation*

When it comes to hosting you have to know who your hosting with and what their backround is in the business, we opened our own hosting company when we couldnt get the level of service we needed for our mainstream and adult clients, since i had 6 years of experience working for IBM's high end hosting and have worked in all these datacenters we figured we could do a better job. A must if your doing a decent level of traffic is a host that owns his own ip space, has his own asn numbers for bgp, who hosts in a tier 1 datacenter has a good compitent staff and has direct contracts with the bandwith providers (we have all of them). If your host doesnt have these you should be asking why. Dont always look for best price, you get what you pay for. And every minute your down is more than you saved on the cheap hosting. just my
