I actually almost lost a domain recently. There must have been some kind of problem with the transfer when i bought it from this guy, because it was showing no expiry date in my registerfly account. I figured i'd message them about it but i never got around to it. Anyways. Having a conversation with a guy about some stuff and domains happened to pop up in the chat, and i suddenly thought to myself.. that domain must be coming up for renewal about now. Fucking thing was in the grace period. No notice from registerfly or anything.
