It was a little more complicated than that, he saw godless communism as a greater evil and the Nazi's were fighting the heathens. They wanted them to defeat the soviets and then sign a peace treaty and stop the war etc.
When it comes down to it though, is there a really big difference between looking the other way while 6 million people from another religion get slaughtered and killing millions of your own followers die with AIDS because you banned condoms?
