I'm inclined to believe your quoted info. From my recollection, Pope Jean Paul II was named pope back in the 70's, not right after the war. As a kid I saw all the "pope" hooplah on TV, and back then we only had about 4 channels, it was on ALL of them.
I do know that the man who was pope during WW II was a badass bugger, and according to many of today's elderly who were alive back then he was a Nazi sympathizer.
