a most unusual request made to me, what do you think I should have said?

Here's the scenario... someone has asked me if I could write a script from scratch that would basically be exactly the same as my site, sponsorslist.com... except that it would also include content, hosting, traffic and everything else, with all details and be searchable and everything.

Not only that, but they expected I'd do it for around $500 and have it done in a week or 2.

Now... ok, barring the fact that they're asking me to create a site to not only compete with my own, but be better in many ways....

Well, it took me over 5 months to script, build, design and do all the data entry for over 700 sponsors in the database just for sponsorslist.

So doing this for $500 within a week or 2 seems... hmm... what's the word... unrealistic?

So I potlitely declined. What are your thoughts? Think it was an odd request to make?

Could have outsourced it to India for $200 and made a profit!

Yeah, exactly... still not likely. Especially if it means creating competition that could potentially mean me losing income in the future as well from my own site.

If it was a serious request then the personal does not understand the market value of this type of work (obviously)

That reminds of the time when someone with a lot of traffic wanted a script written and would pay me $20 an hour. I won't even blink until we're talking at least $50 an hour for a very small project.
