What is it you think? That Mohammed wrote the Koran and then ignored its advice while he was going around slaying the infidels on the Arabian peninsula?

Here's a translation from the internet of a particular passage.

Koran 4.76 "Let those who fight in the cause of God who barter the life of this world for that which is to come; for whoever fights on God's path, whether he is killed or triumphs, We will give him a handsome reward."

Here's the same passage from my copy at home, a standard english version I've had since 1986.

"Let those who would exchange the life of this world for the hereafter, fight for the cause of Allah whether they die or conquer, we shall richly reward them."

I think things are gonna get alot better in the middle east for the next 10-30 years. Dont think you can get a "well-developed capital market" and democracy much faster than that

Great. So you have some friends who no longer agree with the words of the prophet - or rather they believe that the rules of a liberal democracy are more important than the words of their religion's prophet written at the beginning of medieval times. This is exactly what I'm saying. Democracy is the best hope to get Muslims to stop following the example of Mohammed and the caliphs that followed.

Religion this, religion that. More idiotic analysis from uneducated GFYers. One look at India and your theory can be proved WRONG. India is probably the most religious country in the world. Muslims, Hindus, you name it. Intel, Dell, Oracle along with a myriad of other international corporations have bases in India and the Country is growing economically. The main reason? Democracy. This is what the United States is trying to do in the Middle East forcefully since the Middle East is too stubborn to change itself.

It's not just that the Koran contains violence. It's that Mohammed's very example was violence and that people have always and still are following his example. It's pretty difficult to remove the example of the prophet himself, the example of the Caliphs that followed him, his very words, and the system of law, the Sharia, that grew as a result of it.

The best hope I can imagine is to replace people's main identification with Islam with a different societal identification - such as Democracy. It's not that that region hasn't been trying different identifications. For a while many people in the Middle East were trying to identify more with their Arabism than their Islamism. It's a lost civilization. One looking for solutions in many different ways.

The other possibility is that everyone in the world convert to Islam which to me is the greater evil. Nothing like throwing away a half millenium of scientific progress.

A few things the reasons they hate us most of your terrorist groups were trained and funded by us at some point because we needed them to do our dirty work . Then there is a policy change and we leave them holding the bag. Reagan funded and trained Osama to fight the Russians, Bush the first told the kurds to rise up against Saddam we would help them . They did and we never helped and they got slaughtered. If another fuel source was found and left our noses at of there it would solve most of the problems. Who are we to think we can fix it .
