after the first time you fall/crash ask yourself if you really enjoy riding. if you get back on and ride then you'll understand how different and dangerous a bike is.

i got my license just after i had my bike accident. i broke my ankle and messed up alot of smaller bones in my foot, but i got back on after 3 months when i could finally move my foot fully and now i'm riding for 4 years.

take your time, learn how to control your bike and learn how to respect other people on the road and just how dangerous they are. then you can have some fun

Adam and I both have our motorcycle license. I just got mine a couple years ago, but Adam's been riding for 20 years. I have a 2004 GSX-R 600 myself. I love it!

oh i know, i'm not planning to learn how to ride and then try and max it out in the first day... i'll wait like.. 2-3 days.. haha just kidding

i heard a big danger of it is other cars not seeing you and cutting you off...

felixflow: never... but if i know how to drive standard never grinding or stalling i think i'll be able to pick up on how to ride a bike in no time... plus im planning on taking a course....

I'd learn on a dirt bike, or an enduro to start. If you drop it, you won't have to spend $2000 getting it fixed. Also, find a deserted area to practice when you do get the CBR, like a subdivision that isn't finished yet, or a mall parking lot. That's how I learned. I also took the MSF course down here in Tampa, FL. You learn a lot from them, plus you use their bikes.

I actually had my motorcycle endorsement when I was 15 before I got a drivers license haha. Crotch rockets are cool to look at, but they suck for comfort so yea I stick to cruisers. Besides they are just targets for speeding tickets.

They do get tired of newbies signing up and asking if they should get 600 or 1000cc bikes though ;)

                                I've had mine since '82.

Wouldn't be caught dead on a crotch rocket though. Give me a big ol cruiser any day.

                                        I got a 2002 CBR 600

It's a fun bike but I'm getting to old for a rice burner.

Several here have voiced the "they scare the shit outta me" comment. To those people, I have to agree. I have ridden bikes, more notably, Harleys, for the last 30 years (yes, I've been licensed the entire time). Even here in Mexico, I hold both licenses, car and bike.

Being "afraid" isn't the correct word. I think what we all are is "highly respectful" of our bikes. We KNOW what they're capable of doing to us. We have also acquired the ability to "think ahead" of ourselves, while driving. Bikes are not like cars. Things happen much quicker on a bike. Momentum, mass, all things have to be "relearned" on a bike. Bike weight causes even more changes.

The highways and streets are littered with people who 'know how to ride' and don't think the learning portion is important. If you're ready to be hurt, probably badly, just go to the stealership, pop down the cash, and ride the bitch out and forget all the rest. I see "know-it-alls" every day, laying beside the road, moaning "Help me." Shit! The only help they need is to have someone screw they're fucking heads on STRAIGHT!.

As for ricers, I don't appreciate my head being the front bumper. Or, some bitch laying on my back while I drive.

                                              HARLEYs ARE the ONLY motorcycle!

"Ricers", as you call them, accelerate faster, stop quicker, handle and maneuver better, and can overall avoid an accident better than a Harley, if ridden responsibly. There are idiots that ride "ricers", just like there are idiots that ride Harleys. Regardless of what you ride, ride with common sense and with a helmet on your head!

And be careful what you say... that "bitch" might be riding that "ricer" that just passed you!

                                                    I have a few bikes

I like all kinds of bikes, I guess that makes me a motorcyclist.

Thinking about picking up some dirtbikes this fall, too damn hot here during the summer.

I would much rather ride my Interceptor on a long trip than ride my cruiser. But then again, its more of a sport touring bike than a crotch rocket.

I had been a biker for fifteen years, and shortly after moving to AZ I went to get my license. I attended a two day motorcycle safey course. I learned something new there that changed my motorcycle riding enjoyment forever.

Take a motorcycle safety course first.

Last year when a drunk in a uhaul truck hit me, judging from the way my helmet was busted up and my head didnt have a scratch on it, yeah I'd say they save lives.

Most accidents happen at intersections at less than hiway speeds, and that is when a helmet protects the most.

You could be doing a u-turn and drop your bike (and dont even say it cant happen), hit your head on the ground and die from it.

I have no problems with wearing helmets, being an ex-racecar driver I know that you dress for the crash, not for the ride.

And here comes my favorite quote:
"The funny thing about common sense, is that its not very common"
