I no longer do design, but honestly I was never afraid because of the quality and the horrible "engrish."
I even partnered up with someone out of the philippines who lived here in Vegas but had a shop there, and out of 20+ there were only 2 designers that were really good, the others were okay but had potential.
However the issue was not just quality, but that they didn't understand the concept of adult design. That is something you can't always teach no matter how hard you try.
There is a flow to adult design, there are reasons text is placed in certain areas, certain types of images are used and usually what I got back from my filipino guys were designs loaded down with a lot of imagery but no substance . Even after 7 months of training only a few began to grasp it.
There are also time zone differences, and not to mention issues of trust.
Take a look at how the 2 larger, or should I say spammier outsourcing companies have both had issues where others tried to take over their business...yes that's exactly who I want to trust with my proprietary information, my company's more important plans.
Overall the biggest competitive "edge" that outsourcers had was price, but in the end the great thing was I usually ended up with their customers anyway, and because of the horrible experiences they didn't haggle with me about price.
