It's not a bullshit response at all. He obviously just wants to spend more time with his family. And what the hell is wrong with that? If a client that had a problem with that, i'd tell him to go fuck himself. I'm 100% certain that none of Choker's clients care in the slightest that he only attends one convention per year.
