Severe depression (perhaps they were abused or just too damn lonely)
Terminally ill (maybe they couldn't afford the medical expenses)
Mentally unstable (one doesn't have to be sad to be nuts)Comment

For example, you are going to jail for something that you didn't do which causes you to lose your high paying job which both leads to your wife filing for divorce and taking your kids 1000 miles away from you.
