I just saw him live a couple of years ago -- still a fantastic entertainer, but obviously on his last legs. It was very moving.

I live in America where people are free to be into different kinds of music. I never cared for blues/jazz, so I know nothing about this guy, or any other guy in that genre. Plus, I'm probably in a younger generation than his target audience.

yeah, and I didn't know he played saxophone too. He got up from the piano and started wailing on a saxonphone. The show I was at a blast.

Hehehe -- I forgot about that! God, didn't you just think he was going to keel over any second though? The show I saw was in Tacoma, WA - I just had to look it up in my journal:

He was helped onto the stage and started out coughing and hacking a bit. Some of the sustained high notes came out as silent crackly static screams. The force of his voice, the style of his piano playing, his personality . . . it was a privilege to witness in real life. The high points for me were him singing 'Your Cheatin' Heart' and 'It's not Easy Being Green'."
