                Quite funny: Americans didn't seem to give a shit about the war until Nazis sunk one of their ships.

                They did aid financially, but it was the blood of Europeans (most notably ex-USSR) that drove the Nazis back to Berlin.
                1. The ship. I think you mean World War I and even that isn't right since the US entered that war two years after the Lusitania was sunk. The US entered World War II in the Pacific after Pearl Harbor and entered the war in Europe when Germany declared war on the US - probably from a combination of Pearl Harbor and the publishing of "Rainbow 5".

                2. There were more US troops on the western front than any other nation and allied command was under American command.

                No one knows what would have happened without American lend lease or whether a western front could have ever been opened. In the east, the US supplied Russia with crucial supplies. Kruschev once asked how Russian troops would have even got to Berlin without the 400,000 Dodge trucks Russian soldiers rode in. Oh, I'm sure they would have found a way .. eventually.

                        Could not have said it better. Lots and lots of honourable men died for Germany during WWII, and they did it for their people and nation (even if history judges the politics behind it wrong). German soldiers of WWII where amoung the bravest in the world and they deserve to be respected and honored equally, even if a jew is offended here and there.

                                    German 6th army, wich was the best wermacht had, was destroyd at Stalingrad along with Italian 1st army and Rumanina 2nd army. 8 russian armies surrounded them and forced them to surrender. This was begining of the end for Germany. Not fucking D-day

                                    By the way, it was 6th army that conquerd France and BeNeLux. Hitler braged that he could "conquer heaven" with 6th army. And americans never had to fight them. Russians did.

                                            First of all I would like to thank the Americans for all the supplies they send during the war and what happened in Normandië during D-Day. But thinking they where the only heroes who liberated Europe is wrong. Russia is for 70% resposible for that and they lost 15 million soldiers, more then all other countries together.

                                            Sometimes I am in Germany for business and I like to talk to people in a bar in the evening. I can tell you, some 16 year old kids still feel bad for what happened in WWII!

                                            My grandad worked in a concentration camp, he had no choice. Some Jews where shooting Jews, they had no choice.
                                            Some Germans handled the machine guns at the beach, they had no choice.
                                            Not all Germans where fucking Nazi's, they died because they where ordered to fight during the war. Have respect.

                                                as a german I can only say that I am very thankful that the allied destroyed nazi germany as an ideology, although I'm not very thankful that half of my family was killed in the firestorm over Hamburg by them. I am not old enough to feel guilty, but I still feel some kind of responsibility. so in my eyes, everything schroeder did was absolutely right, he could not have done better.

                                                and imagine: 60 years ago we all would have killed each other with guns, not with words.

                                                        I think one thing some of the anti-american euross are forgetting is, Russia was just saving its own neck. They did not care about you, and wouldn't have minded steamrolling you themself just as the Nazis did.

                                                        Hundreds of thousands of Americans died defending a soil that wasn't even theres.

                                                        And lots more Americans died in the following years winning the cold war against communism.

                                                            This is a rather bold statement. I am not American, however I feel that the war would NOT have been won without US involvement. Just the same as British, and us, the Canadians. Americans did a LOT to help win the war, and without Americans, the war effort would have been a fraction of what it was. Not only in troops, or machine guns, but as mentioned earier - supplies, support, etc.

                                                            I can't say I agree that the Russians liberated Europe either. They did a fantastic job pushing back to Germany and lost a LOT of lives fighting.

                                                            But saying COUNTRY X WON THE WAR or COUNTRY Y LIBERATED EUROPE is simply false.

                                                            If I could say one single ABSOLUTE that I believe is true, it is this:

                                                            The fact that Hitler went into Russia when he did set the stage for his eventual defeat.

                                                            That is what liberated Europe. His mistake.
