Make them feel comfortable about showing up by sending a photo of the people who they will be working with. I have a photo of myself and my hair/makeup girl that I send to most models.
Communication the day before and the morning of the shoot is good but it does not always help. I have talked to girls who have said "I am just down the steet, be there in 5 minutes" and they have flaked.

these are all great ideas, along with allowing the model to bring someone to the shoot with them, if you are willing. i find, especially if it's a model's first shoot (with or without you) she's likely to be nervous. anything you can do to make her feel more comfortable will reduce the risk of her cancelling or not showing up.
