If you read the article he doesn't shoot the hog in order to prove it existed. Apparently he shot the pig a while back (6 months ago) and told stories of it which no one believed. National Geographic then went in and dug up the corpse of the hog that had been buried underground for 6 months.
"Donning biohazard suits to exhume the behemoth's smelly remains, the experts estimated Hogzilla was probably only 7 1/2 to 8 feet long, and weighed about 800 pounds. The confirmation came in a documentary aired Sunday night on the National Geographic Channel; it will be rebroadcast Wednesday and Saturday."
So it's a case of the one that got away and no one believing him of its size until now.
I do agree with you on the stupidity of shooting something in order to prove it exists. Imagine if someone dropped a couple rounds into Sasquash! That actually would be pretty funny.
