The problem with being purely democractic in voting is that you end up with a big popularity contest, where it is more about ego and getting members to vote for someone, rather than for having people who can truly provide guidance and additional opinions and observations while serving on the advisory board.
Votes can be bought, as people with their own agendas could purchase membership for people in order to get their way.... so having the most money or political power could still dictate the outcome as you suggested.
The current board seems to be well balanced with people from diverse backgrounds:
* Michelle Freridge, Free Speech Coalition
* Alec Helmy, XBiz.com
* Tom Hymes, AVN Online
* Chris Jester, SplitInfinity
* Holly Moss, Moss Consulting
* Larry Paciotti, CCLR Internet
* Scott Rabinowitz, TrafficDude
* Morgan Sommer, Cybersocket
* Jeff Southworth, Epoch Transaction Services
