Custom coded all the way
Just establish a good relationship with your coder/programmer. Preferably someone who is not interested in traffic or marketing. I'd look for someone that doesn't hang around webmaster boards. My guy just does backends and freelance shit ... I <3 him.

Most geeks -- I mean this as a compliment -- are completely oblivious of the business end of things, regarding how you will apply the code he writes.
