Absolutely true, but actual fruits would also be very expensive. Apple.com in particular would probably cost more than sex.com, as you'd have to buy the computer maker along with it, and it would be encumbered with their ongoing trademark disputes. Plus, if you're in the US, you risk criminal prosecution for hosting porn on an innocuous domain like apple.com.

However, your point is valid, branding can use anything. Made-up names like google and yahoo are still available...you could pick up kroozy.com for $7 and turn it into a billion dollar brand. :-)
