You can find a nice one word dictionary.com at the high end of your price range... but it most likely won't be a high typein traffic name. And it certainly won't be a premium name like private.com. But it's not out of the realm of possibility to find a servicable name. Impure.com sold for $1,200 at the start of this year. That might have been perfect for what you are trying to do.

So you'll have to either look very hard to find a good one that fits your budget, or raise your spending limit. I believe GFY user Illicit was selling illicit.com for $5K. Might not be on the table any longer.

Indeed, you're not likely to find a meaningful, relevant, commonly-used one word dot com like private.com for $2000, not unless you get really lucky. I think you'll have to look at another extension (Rick's perv.net could be a good one), or a short-but-meaningless/irrelevant name, or an uncommon word form, or a two- or three-word domain.

The domain permutation programs frequently turn up weird word modifications that could still be considered one word, though they wouldn't be commonly used. For example, private.com and most variations are gone, but privatizings.com is available. (Not suggesting you use that one, it's available because it sucks, just an example.)

Impure.com's a good example of a decent domain in that price range Paxton...not high type-ins, but you're right, he might find a low-type-in name like that within his budget. Not easy to find 'em but possible.

Absolutely true, but actual fruits would also be very expensive. Apple.com in particular would probably cost more than sex.com, as you'd have to buy the computer maker along with it, and it would be encumbered with their ongoing trademark disputes. Plus, if you're in the US, you risk criminal prosecution for hosting porn on an innocuous domain like apple.com.

However, your point is valid, branding can use anything. Made-up names like google and yahoo are still available...you could pick up kroozy.com for $7 and turn it into a billion dollar brand. :-)
