That is such a shitty solution to controlling outbound spam/viri that it almost makes me think that isn't the problem they are trying to address.

They need to be sued pronto.

Next thing you know they'll be filtering websites that have differing viewpoints to their own political agenda.

KRL, you should email the ACLU or something.
go ahead and sue. they don't give a flying fuck.
sue that's funny they don't care about you, KRL, or me.

You know how much it would cost 2 sue.

Can't sue over business you loose or lost... been there done that.

It's very, very, very, hard 2 prove how much business you lost, at least that's what my asswipe lawyer told me. That was a few years ago, maybe it's easier now.

Guess who i wanted 2 sue... Pacbell.. and they where clearly wrong, and admitted they where wrong. but that's not the point

          KRL,
Is it possible that they are also blocking any emails that are calling for an image online? It's been two days that I get my regular dose of spam (about 700 a day since the CAN-SPAM kicked in - made things worse) but to my ISP email, I would normally get about 20-40, it's been 3 days that I'm not getting anything on those email accounts & I'm also checking on www.mail2web.com to make sure it's not some file blocking them from coming in.

Anyone else with Videotron experiencing the same thing?

I think so. My e-mail has dropped by about 50% recently.

Maybe Bell was the spammers choice in ISPs? Anyhow, wondering if I'm the only one - actually the only emails I got were from monster.ca with links, but I gather they wouldn't be blocking monster.

I just posted the information in my LiveJournal, and I got a response already:

                  "You're gonna love me....

I work for BellSouth installing and repairing DSL for them. I also use
them. The solution is simple...turn mailgaurd off. Thats all.

As for the port 25 filtering, I haven't heard about that yet. I'll bring
it up at the next installer meeting...

I'd also like to point out that I just sent myself an email with several
links, and it went though fine."

So there we have it! I have no reason to distrust this person, and he has no reason to lie to me, so let's assume he's telling the truth.

Ever since Cox started labeling spam emails, I've been having problems getting my mail. It can take days for me to get an email to my partner...who is just on the other side of the wall, in the same house. Yesterday she got an email that was 13 days old. Cox won't answer questions about it - they just say they "know" and they're "working on it". I don't even want to think about how many emails I've missed so they can label 20% of the spam emails. I guess I should just turn the spam guard off and see if that fixes things - it's not as though they do such a great job of getting rid of the stuff.

I have this problem with my ISP, causes hellish trouble losing signup mails and info from other contacts. I've now accepted the cost of running my own mail server as a neccessary evil in doing business, but it sucks that it used to work fine

Looks like mail filtering & scanning is on the rise.

... and then of course broaden that to include anyone that isn't nodding their heads in agreement to whatever comes through the TV.

I just found out where you turn off MailGuard. Retested same thing.

                                  MailGuard filters incoming.

Outgoing must be on another filter system and related to the Port 25 thing they just recently installed on their network.

This is really fucked up. What right do they have to censor our mail like this.

                                  Fucking idiots.

KRL, I still haven't had this problem after testing sending myself some e-mails with different hyperlinks a few times. Can you tell me what specific urls are being filtered for you? I would like to test them myself with my Bellsouth adsl connection.

WASHINGTON -- Federal police are reportedly increasing Internet surveillance after Tuesday's deadly attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Just hours after three airplanes smashed into the buildings in what some U.S. legislators have dubbed a second Pearl Harbor, FBI agents began to visit Web-based, e-mail firms and network providers, according to engineers at those companies who spoke on condition of anonymity.

An administrator at one major network service provider said that FBI agents showed up at his workplace on Tuesday "with a couple of Carnivores, requesting permission to place them in our core, along with offers to actually pay for circuits and costs."

The person declined to say for publication what the provider's response was, "but a lot of people" at other firms were quietly going along with the FBI's request. "I know that they are getting a lot of 'OKs' because they made it a point to mention that they would only be covering our core for a few days, while their 'main boxes were being set up at the Tier 1 carriers' -- scary," the engineer said.

Has anyone heard anything saying that these Carnivore/DCS-1000 units have been removed, or are they still recording data?

The NSA's Echelon Network is scanning everything. TCIP/IP data packets, Faxes, landlines, cell phones, data networks uplinked through satellites. Every form of communication is being scanned for targeted keywords and individuals.

If a targeted individual makes a call from anywhere in the world on any phone system they can trace it now.

Echelon is perhaps the most powerful intelligence gathering organization in the world. Several credible reports suggest that this global electronic communications surveillance system presents an extreme threat to the privacy of people all over the world. According to these reports, ECHELON attempts to capture staggering volumes of satellite, microwave, cellular and fiber-optic traffic, including communications to and from North America. This vast quantity of voice and data communications are then processed through sophisticated filtering technologies.

This massive surveillance system apparently operates with little oversight. Moreover, the agencies that purportedly run ECHELON have provided few details as to the legal guidelines for the project. Because of this, there is no way of knowing if ECHELON is being used illegally to spy on private citizens.
