Would you go to the hospital for this?

Dont know if anyone has experienced problems with this before but one tonsil is swollen and very painful and I have an earache too. I had to just take a vicodin cause the pain is fucking bad. But this is one of those situations where I don't know if you try and ride this out and visit the doctor next week, or if it warrants sitting in the hospital all night and paying for an emergency room visit.
Anyone experience or know anything about this?

I'd go get it checked out... why sit there in pain over a holiday weekend (if its a holiday weekend wherever you are)

I had a horrible tonsil/bronchial infection once, (aggravated by the fact i smoke), I held out as long as I could til finally I drove myself to the emergency room at 3am.

It may pass, but on the other hand the dr. told me some horror stories about people who let these go too long and wind up with permanent vocal chord damage, and a few other crazy things.

      I wish you wellness.

I would definitely have it seen before next week, especially if you have health insurance. You could either hit an E.R. tonight, or you could go to an Urgent Care/Extended Hours clinic tomorrow...

That is most likely an infection. I wouldn't wait - you don't know for sure what it is so get it checked out fast, not next week.

Just take the meds given to you and that infection will be gone in no time. Be sure to stay away from whatever foods the doctor told you not to eat just as yet.

You're not screwed... the hospital will have a large range of antibiotics available to them, which work on a variety of things... if it is another infection, I'm sure they can hook you up (or at least get you on more pain meds...).

definitely need to have it checked. that kinda thing can get serious real fast. especially if it swells to the point it cracks and bleeds. with my kids the doc always tells me to never wait when it comes to their tonsils. feel better soon!!

Just go back in and get different antibiotics... I had my cat on antibiotics for a week and a half for an eye infection with no results, so we switched meds two days ago and it improved almost immediately.

If a hospital is your only option until Monday, then I would. But if you have those "doc in a box" places near you that are open on Saturdays, I'd do that instead. Your hospital may be different than the ones here, but if I went to the ER right now, I'd probably still be there past the time it would take me to go to sleep, get up, and go to the walk-in place first thing in the morning.

I used to work with ears, mouths, throats, etc. The pain in your ear is probably pressure or fluid trapped in your middle ear. If your tonsil is swollen, your eustachian tube can't open and let your middle ear equalize. Plus, your middle ear is supposed to be a hollow, air filled space. When fluid hangs around in there, bacteria gets in and causes a nasty infection. It's easy for the bacteria from your throat to travel up your eustachian tube and get in there, esp if you're blowing your nose.

The doctor will probably need to culture you and see exactly what kind of bacteria it is, to prescribe you the right medicine. The one you've been taking, may not work for your ear infection at all.

Probably the only thing will make it feel better tonight is if your eardrum ruptures and eases some of the pressure.

Pain killers for a tonsil infection? Wow... prescribed antibiotics would do the trick.

No, don't be scared. Even if it ruptures, it will be fine. As a matter of fact, it will probably feel a whole hell of a lot better. There might be some junk to run out, like puss or blood. Don't get any water in it or put anything in it until you see a doctor, but it's really not a big deal. They usually heal up on their own and it won't affect your hearing. There are probably people walking around with one right now, that don't even know it.

Usually heat will help ear infection pain. Try wrapping a hot water bottle (or anything filled with hot water) and putting it against your ear. You can put towels in the dryer or even use a hair dryer, but put a towel between it and your ear. Don't blow the air right into your ear canal.

I had an bad earache and went to "Quick(and nasty)Care".
The Doc gave me allergy medicine and painkillers.

The next day I had blood coming out my ear.

I saw an ear specialist later and he said my ear drum had burst because the original Doc never gave me antibiotics.

                                                      Luckily no hearing loss.

Don't mean to scare ya, but yeah get it checked out tomorrow

Oh so that was it... the dr told us it was blleding very much. Funny thing is I have never had problems with the regenerated one. When it gets sensitive once in a while, like in every 4-5 yr. , I just eat some ice cream and it gets better But luckily I have never had ear problems.

My sister also had them removed and she still cannot drink a glass of iced tea or ice cream or gets sick. Funny..
