I was looking through this and I find it really interesting...
A large portion of the items, while pretty stupid, were/are getting tons of media exposure. Expensive, but I'll bet it can be effective advertising!
The kind of people that visit these ebay auctions after hearing the news are probably a decent target market for the casino...
