I wouldn't put it on the outside unless you want to moderate it heavily. You'll get all kind of shit posters and spammers if left in the open.
Most message boards i have seen inside members areas are not very busy at all. I would suggest a journal type of a board. I personally use grey matter for mine and it helps keep the guys involved and lets them post back to me very easily.

If its on the outside, you're paying for chat that isnt neccessarily helping you in any way, and the moderation work will increase a lot.
Keeping it as a value-added for the members seems like a better idea.Comment

I used a real time chat room way back in the day when I was doing paysites. Don't think it would have made a difference whether I kept it or took it off. Unless you have heavy member traffic, it's probably not much of a value-added service to the member.Comment

Our message boards are inside the protected area as well. Doesn't get too much traffic, though it's starting to grow. The fun one is movie reviews we implemented. Reading some of the stuff that our users are writing while watching a porn flick is pretty funny. Both are relatively easy to moderate as most members tend to be on the level and not assholes.Your post count means nothing.Comment

Besides, outside that board will milk bandwidth. Push it as a feature in your tour, save the bandwidth for the ppl actually paying you
